GreenWare

Electronic Waste 2024-2025

The problem: E-waste is discarded electronics such as phones, computers, and appliances. In 2022, about 62 million tons of e-waste were produced worldwide, and improper disposal can cause health and environmental problems.

The response: They collected used electronics from places like schools and took them to a recycling facility. The electronics were wiped, repaired or reused when possible, and donated to organizations, while awareness campaigns taught people about proper e-waste disposal.

The impact: They collected 600+ electronic devices in over 10 sites

This section gives visitors a more complete view of how one project developed.

The Problem

People often throw away electronics such as phones, computers, game consoles, and appliances instead of donating or recycling them. This creates large amounts of e-waste, which can waste valuable materials and cause health and environmental problems when it is disposed of improperly.

The Goal

The goal was to reduce the amount of electronics being thrown away and encourage people to recycle or reuse them. The team also wanted to give usable electronics and parts a second life while supporting responsible consumption and production.

What the Team Did

The team planned to collect used electronics from schools and other collection sites and bring them to the Shady Grove Processing and Transfer Facility. They would wipe data from devices, remove reusable parts, donate working electronics to organizations, and create an awareness campaign to educate people about e-waste.

The Result

The project could collect about 500 pounds of e-waste from 10 sites, 1,000 pounds from 20 sites, and 1,500 pounds from 30 sites. This could save an estimated 125, 250, or 375 laptops, as well as valuable materials such as copper, steel, plastic, and aluminum. The project could also prevent toxic materials from entering the environment and provide affordable or donated electronics to people with lower incomes.

Clothing and Sustainability

EcoStyle

Problem

Unwanted clothing often ends up in landfills, causing pollution and methane emissions.

Action

EcoStyle collects unwanted clothes through collection boxes and sustainably recycles them through GreenDrop.

Impact

Reduces textile waste, promotes sustainable recycling, and raises awareness about fast fashion

Technology and Sustainibility

Green Corners for Everyone

Problem

Communities have neglected urban spaces and limited access to nature.

Action

Green Corners for everyone transformed these spaces using native plants and community involvement.

Impact

They created greener, more biodiverse spaces and gives communities better access to nature.
